Uganda to withdraw troops from Central African Republic

KAMPALA, Uganda – A military official says Uganda plans to withdraw troops from a mission in Central African Republic whose goal is to hunt down members of the Lord's Resistance Army rebel group.

Ugandan military spokesman Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda said Friday that authorities have notified the African Union of plans to withdraw troops before the end of this year.

Ankunda said the rebel group no longer poses a threat to Uganda.

About 2,500 Ugandan soldiers are operating in the jungles of Central African Republic under the AU mission. They are supported by U.S. special forces.

Joseph Kony, the LRA leader, is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. The group is well-known for recruiting boys to fight and taking girls as sex slaves.
