Researchers at the University of Georgia are teaming with the University of Puerto Rico to create a renewable energy center focused on growing algae-based biofuels.

The collaboration is being funded by a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense. UGA will get $1.2 million of that for its state-of-the-art algae research facility.

The university will focus on the production of different strains of microalgae grown in wastewater. The researchers will also study the economic viability of an algae-based biofuels industry.
