Authorities say two Odessa police officers were shot Wednesday while attempting to serve a warrant at an apartment complex in the West Texas city, and a nine-hour standoff ended with the suspect being taken into custody.

Police said that the officers were taken to the hospital and are listed in fair condition. Police said Sgt. Pete Gonzales was shot in the arm and Officer Cory Wester sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and upper leg.

Police said that officers went to the apartment around 11:30 a.m. to try to locate a person wanted on a parole violation warrant. Police said that at about 11:55 a.m., the wanted subject began shooting and officers, striking Gonzalez and Wester.

Police said that at about 9 p.m., the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody.

Roads were blocked off in the neighborhood amid the standoff, and surrounding homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The Texas Rangers will take over the criminal investigation.
