Turkey's main opposition leader has joined the chorus of anger at a crackdown on media critical of the government, accusing the ruling party of choking democracy.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu reminded Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu that he made a post-election pledge to work toward reconciliation in the highly polarized country. Kilicdaroglu leader spoke during a meeting with former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica.

Over the past weeks, authorities have arrested two editors of a weekly and seized a media company that owned two opposition television stations.

In August, authorities detained three journalists reporting in Turkey's mostly Kurdish southeast. One of them, Iraqi citizen Mohammed Rasool, is still in custody.
