A Turkish art gallery says it has closed down an exhibition in Istanbul of the works of Joan Miro after directors of the Spanish surrealist painter's estate said some of the pieces were fakes.

Emre Sefer, owner of ARETE art gallery, told The Associated Press on Friday that officials from Miro's foundation were due in Turkey in January for discussions and to determine which of the works were fakes. The exhibition was due to run until Jan 19.

Sefer said around 60 works attributed to the late artist were on display at the exhibition. He said ARETE acquired the pieces from galleries in the United States and Canada.

Sefer said: "We are waiting to learn which of the pieces are fake so that we can go back to our suppliers."
