Four French tourists were in critical condition after a tour bus they were riding in was hit by a truck and overturned Monday in a northwestern Indian city.

About 30 other French tourists received more minor injuries in the accident in the historic city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan state, police said.

The French Embassy in New Delhi said the ambassador was traveling to Jodhpur where the injured were being treated in a hospital.

The tourists were leaving a resort when the accident occurred. Police said the truck slammed into the bus on a highway that goes around the city.

India has the world's deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
