China's meteorological agency says a strong tropical storm is bearing down on the southern resort island of Hainan at the height of the country's weeklong National Day holiday.

Tropical Storm Mujigae is expected to strengthen into a typhoon by the time it lands on Hainan around noon Sunday with wind speeds of more than 151 kilometers (94 miles) per hour.

Heavy rain is expected for the island along with neighboring Guangdong province.

As of midday Saturday, the storm was moving northwest at about 22 kph (13 mph).

Sunday marks the midpoint of the National Day holiday, when thousands of Chinese tourists flock to Hainan and other popular vacation destinations.

The Hainan provincial government's website said fishing boats had been ordered to remain in port.
