Local authorities say a tour bus carrying young British nationals on their way home from a winter sports getaway has crashed on the way down from a ski station in the French Alps and burst into flames, killing at least one person.

Three injured people were flown by helicopter to a hospital after the bus slammed Tuesday into a cliff on a bend atop the winding road to Alpe d'Huez. The ski station is perhaps best known for its steep climb featured in the Tour de France.

Spokeswoman Catherine Ducros of the Isere regional government said the bus had 53 people on board, including two drivers. She said it was not immediately clear where the young adults were from in Britain.
