MORAINE, Ohio (AP) – A 3-year-old boy who was found unresponsive in a hot car outside his grandparents' home has died at an Ohio hospital, authorities said.
The boy was reported missing Wednesday evening in Moraine, just south of Dayton, and after a brief search involving dozens of people, a relative found him in an inoperable vehicle with the windows up. Temperatures in the area were in the mid-80s at the time.
Moraine police said the boy, Camilo Juarez, who was known as Cam, died Friday at Dayton Children's Hospital. It's unclear how long he was in the vehicle.
Police are investigating whether he got into the car on his own, but they don't suspect foul play, police Sgt. Jon Spencer told The Associated Press on Saturday. The grieving family has been fully cooperative with the investigation, Spencer said.
"Obviously it's a tragedy for them," he said. "I can't even fathom what the family is going through."
He said Cam lives not far from his grandparents' home and had been playing there earlier on Wednesday.
An autopsy was planned, but the coroner's office said it wasn't releasing any information on the case Saturday.
Spencer said there were no immediate charges, but the case will be reviewed by the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office in accordance with local procedure.
A community vigil was held Saturday night in Moraine for Cam. Dozens of people, including some young children, gathered to honor his memory.
Dayton Children's Hospital reported that as of late May, eight children around the U.S. had died after being trapped in hot cars, according to the Dayton Daily News. The head of the hospital's Center for Child Health and Wellness has said the temperature in a car can rise sharply in as little as 10 minutes even in mild weather, and a child's body can heat several times faster than an adult's body.
