Thousands of women have taken to the streets in Togo to protest the death of an opposition figure who had been jailed.

Tuesday's march comes nearly two weeks ago after the death of Etienne Yakanou.

Authorities say he suffered from malaria. His supporters, though, say he did not receive adequate medical care and should have been brought sooner to a hospital.

Yakanou had been detained since January in connection with a blaze at two huge markets in Togo's capital.

Among Tuesday's protesters was Yakanou's widow and two daughters. She says her husband was at home the night of the fire.

Togo, a West African nation that has been led by the same family for nearly half a century, has seen a number of protests in recent months.
