UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. envoy for Afghanistan says a Taliban dispute over who will succeed their late leader Mullah Mohammad Omar would not prevent peace talks with Afghanistan's government from resuming "in the next couple of weeks."
Nicholas Haysom spoke to reporters Thursday after telling the U.N. Security Council that the country's path to stability can't be taken for granted.
He says peace talks have been on hold as "the dust hasn't settled" on the succession issue.
U.S. and Chinese representatives supervised the first round of peace talks in July.
Haysom says Secretary of State John Kerry and China's foreign minister will co-chair a meeting on Afghanistan on Sept. 26 during a U.N. gathering of world leaders.
