Taiwan's High Court has sentenced a Taiwanese man to 18 months in prison for spying for China.

The decision Tuesday came two months after 35-year-old Lai Kun-chieh was arrested for allegedly trying to obtain sensitive information from a military officer.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry says Lai was recruited by Chinese intelligence agents while working in China. It says the military officer reported the incident and there was no leak of classified information.

Local media say Lai was seeking information on Taiwan's Patriot air defense systems.

Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing still claims Taiwan as part of its territory. Despite warming ties in recent years, the two sides still spy on each other.
