KANO, Nigeria – Police say gunmen suspected to be followers of a radical Islamist sect have shot and killed a Shiite leader in northern Nigeria, as the military arrested an organizer for the sect.
Kano state police commissioner Ibrahim Idris said Friday that gunmen shot and killed Muhammad Ali at his home in the state capital of Kano. Idris said officers believe his killers came from the sect known as Boko Haram.
Muslims in Nigeria's north are predominantly Sunni, though the Shiite have gained followers in recent years.
Idris also said soldiers arrested a man suspected to be a Boko Haram leader in the state from the southern state of Osun, as well as his wife and five children. The commissioner said soldiers found bombs, guns and ammunition in the suspected leader's home.
