Witnesses say suspected militants from the Boko Haram extremist group have killed 16 people in a Niger village not far from the border with Nigeria.

Adam Boukarna, who runs a radio station in the town of Diffa, said the attack on took place Wednesday night, with the assailants arriving on motorbikes and firing on "anything that moved."

He said the gunmen also raided local shops and that multiple people were injured in addition to those killed.

The area has been targeted multiple times this year by the Nigeria-based extremists. Niger is one of five countries contributing to a regional force whose aim is to wipe out Boko Haram.

Amnesty International says the group's six-year insurgency has left an estimated 20,000 dead.
