HULL, England -- A chef in the UK who nearly died after his girlfriend stabbed him with a kitchen knife went to her trial -- to propose marriage, The Sun reports.

Gregory Todd, 48, took a gold and diamond engagement ring with him and got Tiffany Baillie's attorney to pop the question in the court.

But she was returned to prison Thursday without answering. Todd now faces an agonizing wait until Wednesday, when she is sentenced.

He spent three months in the hospital after fellow chef Baillie, 32, plunged the knife in his back as he slept.

She was distraught at losing their baby in a miscarriage and they had a drunken argument.

The attack in Hessle, northeastern England, also happened near the anniversary of the death of Baillie's son.

She said to cops, "What have I done?" Baillie admitted wounding with intent. Now Todd is praying for a suspended sentence.

Lawyer Paul Genney said at Hull Crown Court, "Mr. Todd has brought a ring to propose. They want to get married."

Judge Michael Mettyear said, "I want time to think about it. This is a difficult case." Later Todd said, "I want her home. She's my rock."
