Spain's Defense Ministry says a military helicopter that was heading from Senegal to the Canary Islands has crashed in the Atlantic Ocean and a search is on for the three crew members aboard.

The ministry says in tweets that the helicopter went down about 280 miles (450 miles) from its destination on the island of Gran Canaria.

Officials were trying to confirm that the three crew members were aboard a life raft from the helicopter.

The ministry didn't say when the accident happened on Thursday and provided no details about what might have caused the helicopter to go down.
