Spanish investigators are trying to determine the cause of a jet fighter crash at a military base that killed 10 military personnel involved in a NATO training exercise and injured 21 when the plane crashed into at least five other parked planes after a failed takeoff.

Spain's Defense Ministry says in a statement the two pilots aboard the Greek F-16 that crashed were killed along with eight French air force members who were on the ground at the Los Llanos air base in southeastern Spain.

Eleven Italians and 10 French were injured, five suffering from severe burns that required them to be transported to a Madrid hospital.

The statement late Monday night said three French jets and two Italian jets were damaged in the crash.
