JOHANNESBURG – Soccer club Orlando Pirates says South Africa goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has died, with local media reporting he was killed in a shooting.
The Pirates issued a statement on their website on Sunday saying the club "has learned with sadness about the untimely death of our number one goalkeeper and current captain Senzo Meyiwa."
The club did not disclose further details. The South African Press Association cited a national soccer association spokesman and police as saying Meyiwa had been shot dead.
Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza said "this is a sad loss whichever way you look at it — to Senzo's family, his extended family, Orlando Pirates and to the nation."
