SANAA, Yemen -- A medical official says a young girl was killed when a shell fired by security forces hit her home in the city of Taiz in south Yemen.
For weeks, security forces there have been battling armed tribesmen who say they are protecting protesters calling for the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
The medical official, who saw the body, said two people were injured in the strike that killed the girl, believed to be 10 years old.
A security official said three soldiers and two militants have been killed since Thursday in clashes in the southern Abyan provice, where Islamist militant groups have taken over entire towns.
