South African police say they have identified two dead bodies as those of a French couple wanted for allegedly shooting at a police officer.

Spokesman McIntosh Polela said Friday police are investigating whether the couple, found Thursday, committed suicide or were shot by police. Polela says the couple allegedly shot at police last week, killing one officer and wounding another, after police found six or seven illegal firearms, ammunition and used cartridges in their house. They fled their house in rural western South Africa, prompting a weeklong manhunt. Police found them 500 yards (meters) from the incident.

Philippe Meniere and Agnes Jardel had been living on a farm in South Africa for 12 years, according to the farm's owners, who told police they were harboring weapons.
