S. African minister fired over corruption dies

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa's president has announced the death of a former minister he fired in a corruption scandal.

In his announcement Monday, President Jacob Zuma made no mention of the cloud over Sicelo Shiceka, a 45-year-old veteran of the anti-apartheid struggle who President Jacob Zuma said died Monday after a long illness.

Shiceka was the Cabinet minister overseeing cooperation between local and national agencies until Zuma fired him last year. An independent government anti-graft investigator had concluded that Shiceka had "willfully misled" Zuma about a trip to Switzerland, reportedly to visit a girlfriend imprisoned there on drug charges, and should repay government money spent on unwarranted hotel stays and travel.
