Rwandan police say they killed a suspected extremist following a three-hour firefight in the capital, Kigali, on Wednesday.

Police identified the suspect as Channy Mbonigaba of the western district of Rubavu.

In a statement Thursday, police sought to reassure the public that "the situation is back to normal."

Police say the suspect had barricaded himself in a house and injured one officer during the firefight.

This East African country has never been attacked by Islamic extremists, but authorities now say there is threat of an extremist network here.

Rwandan police in January shot dead a Muslim cleric in Kigali who was suspected of recruiting for the Islamic State group.
