Romania's prime minister designate has briefly met top European Union officials, assuring them of his future government's commitment to the EU.

Prime Minister-designate Dacian Ciolos met European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council Donald Tusk on Saturday afternoon at Bucharest airport.

Former Prime Minister Victor Ponta and his Cabinet resigned following mass protests over a nightclub fire where at least 55 people died. Protesters say the tragedy was due to lax fire regulations and corruption.

Juncker and Tusk stopped in Bucharest on their way to the G-20 summit in Ankara.

Ciolos, a former EU agriculture commissioner, will name his Cabinet of technocrats on Monday.
