BUCHAREST, Romania – Romania's foreign ministry says it is checking the authenticity of a tape that claims a Romanian security worker was kidnapped by a group with ties to the Islamic State group.
Adnan Abu al-Walid al-Sahrawi, who describes himself as the leader of the group, says it is responsible for kidnapping the Romanian on April 4 in Burkina Faso, in an audio statement sent Monday to Mauritanian news site Al-Akhbar. The armed group, active in the Azwad region north of Mali, said it holds the Romanian government responsible for the fate of the hostage.
Romanian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bogdan Stanescu said Tuesday the ministry would verify the authenticity of the tape and continue to cooperate with its partners.
Romania set up a crisis cell in April after the Romanian was kidnapped.
