ANKARA, Turkey – A Turkish media report says many refugees from the Yazidi religious community in Turkey have no intention of returning to their homeland in northern Iraq, even though Islamic State group extremists were driven out of the area last week.
Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-based airstrikes pushed the IS out of the town of Sinjar a year after the extremists captured it in a rampage across northern Iraq. IS had captured thousands of Yazidis and forced Yazidi women into sexual slavery.
The private Dogan news agency, reporting Tuesday from a 5,000-person Yazidi refugee camp in southeast Turkey, said about half of the refugees there had already left the camp, hoping to reach Europe. Those remaining did not want to return to Sinjar, still fearing for their security.
