A 20-year-old German man lost both legs and an arm after becoming pinned between two streetcar wagons and dragged three kilometers (nearly two miles) through a western German city until a passenger noticed and pulled the emergency brake.

Bild newspaper on Tuesday quoted the man's friend saying he had lost his balance while trying to run to the front of the streetcar in Dortmund to get on board at around midnight on Saturday. The newspaper said he lost his limbs after emergency surgery, but Dortmund police could not immediately be reached for confirmation. It was not clear whether the man was expected to survive.

Police told the dpa news agency that somehow the trapped man had not been noticed in the dark, accounting for the delay rescuing him.
