BUENOS AIRES – Two Argentine judges are under fire for cutting the sentence of a convicted child abuser on the grounds that his 6-year-old victim had suffered earlier abuse and therefore had already been traumatized.
In the newly publicized 2014 ruling, the judges cut the child abuser's sentence from six years to 38 months.
Judge Horacio Piombo defended the ruling in radio interviews Monday against denunciations by gay rights groups and other attorneys.
He says an earlier molestation by the child's father had led the boy to "depravation," and left him with "signs of a conduct of transvestism" so the later abuse was not as "gravely outrageous" as the original offense.
The Argentine Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Trans says it wants the judges removed.
The boy's father is in jail.
