Queen Elizabeth II grants audience to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
TORONTO – New Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace later this month.
Trudeau's office said they'll meet Nov. 25 before he attends the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in Malta.
His visit comes 38 years after his father caused an international sensation with a pirouette behind the Queen. Late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was caught on camera doing a pirouette behind her in 1977 as he took part in a summit in London.
Years after what many thought was a spontaneous event, one of Pierre Trudeau's aides revealed that the gesture was planned and rehearsed as a show of disdain for a palace protocol that separated heads of government from heads of state.
Justin Trudeau says he's "absolutely delighted" to meet the queen.
