South Africa's sports ministry says a public memorial service will be held for three of the country's sporting figures who died within days of each other.

The ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the service will be held in Johannesburg at a sports stadium that holds more than 6,000 people on Thursday.

The combined memorial service will honor popular national soccer team captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, former 800-meter world champion and Olympic silver medalist Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and professional boxer Phindile Mwelase.

Meyiwa was killed in an apparent robbery on Sunday evening and police have made no arrests in the murder.

Mulaudzi died in car crash on Friday, and female welter weight fighter Mwelase died Saturday after two weeks in a coma following a bout.
