Residents in one of Rio de Janeiro's biggest complex of slums demonstrated Friday over the shooting death of a young boy in the shantytown, allegedly at the hands of police.

Some protesters briefly clashed with police after the rally. The protesters hurled rocks and bottles while police officers responded with tear gas and stun grenades.

Ten-year-old Eduardo de Jesus Ferreira was shot dead Thursday at the Complexo Alemão during a police operation against suspected drug traffickers. The boy's mother, Terezinha Maria de Jesus, told the G1 news portal that her son was at the door of their house when she saw a police officer shoot him.

Police officials said the officers involved in the anti-gang operation have been suspended while an investigation is being carried out.
