SARAJEVO, BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA – Bosnian police on Friday searched a presidential office and other government buildings as part of an investigation into corruption among top public officials in one of the country's two main sections.
The nation of Bosnia-Herzegovina consists of the Serb-run Republika Srpska and the Bosniak-Croat Federation. Both are highly independent, and each has its own president, government and parliament.
Without giving many details, the Bosnian prosecutor's office said the searches were part of a probe into corruption among leaders of the Bosniak-Croat Federation.
An adviser to Bosniak-Croat Federation President Zivko Budimir confirmed that his office was being searched. Laura Bosnjak said Budimir was in the building, but that he was "separated from his staff."
Anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International says Bosnia is one of the most corruption-prone countries in Europe, due partly to its complex administrative framework and deep ethnic and political divisions.
