SOUTH SHIELDS, England -- A pregnant woman who was stopped by police in northeastern England was found to be almost twice over the legal alcohol limit as she drove back from her own baby shower.
Kaley Anderson, 22, was told by magistrates that she had endangered the life of her unborn child by drinking wine at the party in the town of South Shields, The Shields Gazette reported Thursday.
She was pulled over by police shortly after midnight on Aug. 20 after they spotted her driving erratically and without the lights switched on.
Magistrate Frances Geddes told her, "You have a baby in your tummy at the moment and you were endangering the life of your baby. I hope you realize how seriously we take drink driving because people could have been killed."
Anderson's lawyer, Kevin Smallcombe, told the court, "She is shortly due to give birth to her second child, and she had been to a baby shower party. There was some alcohol and she had some wine and orange juice, and did not think she was over the limit. But clearly she was."
He added, "It is out of character and she is deeply sorry for her actions. She is aware she has a baby to think about, and is deeply ashamed."
Anderson, who pleaded guilty, was disqualified from driving for 18 months, fined $278.
