A Puerto Rico policeman arrested on suspicion of killing three fellow officers at work was shot three times during the incident, authorities said Tuesday.

Dr. Israel Ayala told reporters that Guarionex Candelario Rivera had a bullet lodged in his thorax and another in his arm. Ayala said the 50-year-old suspect might have to undergo surgery but was expected to recover.

It was not revealed who shot Candelario. Authorities have said they will not release any details because the investigation is still underway.

Police say Candelario, a 19-year police veteran, is suspected of shooting a female lieutenant, a male commander and a policewoman Monday while holding them hostage at the station in the southern coastal city of Ponce. It is Puerto Rico's second largest city.

Authorities said Candelario previously had been stripped of his weapon but it was returned after he completed a psychological evaluation nearly two years ago. Police have declined to release any details of that case.

The victims were Lt. Luz Soto Segarra and Cmdr. Frank Román Rodríguez, both 49, and 42-year-old policewoman Rosario Hernández de Hoyos. Soto was with the department 23 years, Román 28 years and Hernández 15 years.
