Polish officials say a malfunction at a coal power plant has caused a leakage of fuel, and emergency officials are working to make sure it doesn't contaminate the nearby Vistula River.

A spokesman for the plant, Piotr Ludwiczak, told the TVN24 news station that about nine tons of fuel leaked from the plant, but was stopped by a protective barrier before it could enter the river.

Firefighters, however, say trace amounts spilled into the river.

The malfunction Wednesday occurred in Kozienice, which is 80 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of Warsaw.
