Police say they shot a man dead at a Sydney police station.

Police said in a statement the man was shot during a confrontation on Tuesday at the Quakers Hill police station in northwest Sydney. Police provided no other details.

There was no mention of whether the confrontation might be linked to Muslim extremists. Police have been identified as targets of attacks inspired by the Islamic State group.

A 15-year-old boy was shot dead by police soon after he fatally shot a civilian police employee outside the state police headquarters in Parramatta in western Sydney in October last year.

The police statement says no police officer was injured in the latest incident.
