Police in Indian-controlled Kashmir say gunmen have opened fire on a military convey and at a hotel. At least one person was killed and two were wounded.

A police official says the suspected insurgents attacked the convoy on the outskirts of Srinigar on Friday and then entered the grounds of the Silver Star hotel and continued firing. The three victims were hotel employees.

The police officer says a search operation was under way. He couldn't be named because he wasn't authorized to speak to reporters.

Several rebel groups are fighting Indian rule. None has issued statements on the incident.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and claimed by both.

Since 1989, a separatist insurgency and subsequent crackdown by Indian forces have killed an estimated 68,000 people.
