MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Police say sect members have killed a soldier, a police officer and three bystanders in Nigeria's northeast to avenge the killings of their colleagues.
Daniel Altine said Tuesday that the attackers shot dead five people Monday evening and injured three others at a checkpoint in the town of Mubi.
Authorities believe Boko Haram members attacked Mubi to avenge the army killing six suspected sect members at a secret training camp in the town on Monday.
Altine also said there were two explosions Monday, but no one was hurt.
Monday's army crackdown came a day after the suicide bombing of a Catholic church in central Nigeria and retaliatory violence left 10 people dead.
Boko Haram, held responsible for killing more than 340 people this year alone, has claimed responsibility for church attacks in the past.
