DUBLIN – Armed police have deployed a security cordon around a gangland funeral in Dublin as senior underworld figures mourn a henchman gunned down 10 days ago.
Bomb-sniffing dogs swept the scene ahead of Monday's funeral of David Byrne, a member of the international drug-trafficking gang of Christy Kinahan.
The 34-year-old Byrne was killed by a rival criminal faction Feb. 3 when five gunmen — three disguised as an elite police unit, one dressed as a blonde woman — stormed into a Dublin hotel hosting a boxing weigh-in and targeted figures connected to Kinahan's Spain-based empire. Two other men were wounded.
Signs outside the venue, St. Nicolas of Myra Catholic Church, warned photographers to stay out of the church grounds. Last week journalists covering the gang war received death threats.
