MINSK, Belarus – Police in the capital of Belarus have arrested at least five people at a protest demanding the release of all political prisoners.
Two former presidential candidates, two opposition leaders and a prominent human rights activist are jailed in the authoritarian former Soviet nation.
A few dozen activists from a movement called European Belarus held the protest Tuesday evening on the main square in Minsk, the capital. They held portraits of those jailed and shouted "Freedom to political prisoners."
Police quickly moved in and arrested at least five of them.
The United States and European Union also have demanded that the President Alexander Lukashenko free all political prisoners.
