Poland's foreign minister has summoned the German ambassador over recent "anti-Polish" statements by German politicians who have criticized the politics of the new right-wing ruling party.

The meeting between Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski and German Ambassador Rolf Nikel will be held on Monday, the Polish Foreign Ministry said.

European Parliament President Martin Schulz on Sunday likened Poland's current politics to those of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and another prominent member of Germany's Social Democratic Party, Volker Kauder, recently spoke in favor of sanctions against Poland if the country continues to, he said, ignore the principles of the rule of law.

The comments were in reaction to new legislation that Poland's ruling Law and Justice party adopted on a constitutional court and on state media.
