An American Airlines flight bound for Chicago has made an emergency landing in Ireland. The flight was carrying 211 passengers and crew members and traveling from Manchester, England.

The Boeing 767 plane landed safely at Shannon Airport in Ireland. All of the passengers aboard safely got off the plane.

The head of operations and services at Shannon Airport, Niall Maloney tells Fox News that American flight 55 experienced an "aircraft emergency" and was diverted to the airport.

American Airlines headquarters in Dallas issued a statement saying the flight was diverted “as a precaution due to a mechanical issue.”  The statement also said a maintenance team is evaluating the aircraft.

Emergency vehicles responded to the incident. All passengers disembarked the plane and are in the transit lounge awaiting information on travel arrangements.
