A U.S. Marine fighter jet crashed northeast of London killing the pilot, Fox News confirms.
Officials have not identified the pilot, and it's unclear whether others were hurt. The F/A-18C Hornet crashed six miles northwest of Royal Air Force Station Lakenheath in Suffolk.
U.S. military officials did not say if the pilot had ejected from the jet. The single-seat aircraft belonged to Marine Attack Fighter Squadron 232 stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
The jet was one of six going from Bahrain to Miramar, the Marine Corps added. The other five planes were safely diverted to a nearby air base.
Cambridgeshire Police said the jet crashed after it had taken off from Lakenheath.
The U.S. Air Force says it investigating. Cambridgeshire Fire Services said two crew had been called to farmland in Redmere in Cambridgeshire, about 7 miles from the air base, on Wednesday.
A year ago a U.S. Air Force F-15 crashed in a field near the air base. The pilot was not seriously hurt.
In January 2014 four U.S. Air Force crew members based at Lakenheath died when their helicopter hit a flock of geese and crashed during a training mission.
