Former President Fernando Lugo of Paraguay has been hospitalized with a viral infection and a compromised immune system after undergoing dental surgery.

Former health minister Esperanza Martinez says Lugo sought emergency treatment over the weekend and was operated on Tuesday.

Lugo has had lymphatic cancer and his immune system has trouble fighting infections.

Legislators removed the 61-year-old former Roman Catholic bishop from the presidency last year, but he recently won a seat in Paraguay's senate.
