The Pakistani army says two members of the security forces and eight militants have been killed in a pair of clashes.

A Thursday statement says soldiers carried out a raid in the Tarel valley, killing three militants involved in attacks on tourists and security forces. It says the exchange of fire also killed two security personnel.

The army says another five militants were killed when soldiers returned fire as they attacked a checkpoint in the Khyber tribal region.

The clashes came a day after a bomb blast killed 17 people on a bus carrying government employees in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Pakistani Taliban has waged a war with the state for more than a decade.
