ATHENS, Greece – An opinion poll indicates the radical left Syriza party of former prime minister Alexis Tsipras is pulling ahead of the conservative main opposition party in the run-up to Greece's snap general election on Sept. 20.
The poll published in the Efimerida ton Syntakton newspaper Friday showed Syriza with 28.5 percent compared to 23.5 percent for the opposition New Democracy party. A significant portion of respondents — 17.5 percent — were undecided or would not answer.
The small nationalist Independent Greeks, with which Syriza governed in its seven-month coalition government, was polling at 2.5 percent — it takes at least 3 percent to win any seats in parliament.
Conducted by ProRata on Sept. 7-9, the nationwide poll questioned 1,300 people by telephone and had margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
