Official: Greek businessman found dead with gun at his side

A Greek police official says an oil executive whose company filed for bankruptcy in June has been found dead in his home in an Athens suburb.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak about the case, said Sunday that a gun was found by Kyriakos Mamidakis' side and that police are at the house.

The 84-year-old Mamidakis was chairman of the board of Mamidoil-Jetoil, an oil company that is active in Greece and the Balkans and operates about 600 gas stations.

Mamidoil-Jetoil filed for bankruptcy on June 9, declaring that it owed creditors 314 million euros ($350 million) at the end of 2015, while having cash reserves of 600,000 ($668,000).

Mamidakis was also involved in hotel management, shipping, and oil and wine production.
