Newswire service, South African Press Association to shut down

JOHANNESBURG – The South African Press Association announced that it will soon shut down.

The news agency said on its website Thursday that its last story will be published at midnight on March 31. The agency's board chairwoman, Minette Ferreira, said in a statement that the organization's operation will end on that day.

The South African Press Association statement said the board had decided last year to close. As a not for profit organization, the news agency may not be sold off.

According to its website, the South African Press Association was founded in 1938 and serves as the primary source of breaking news in the country. An independent non-governmental news agency, it supplied news and information to a number of radio, television and print news outlets.
