Syria's official news agency says a mortar round has hit an upscale central Damascus neighborhood, killing a child and wounding four people.

It is not uncommon for Damascus to be shelled. Sunday's attack targeted the posh neighborhood of Abu Rummaneh, which houses hotels and several embassies. The agency, quoting a police official, said a girl was killed in the attack.

An Associated Press reporter on the scene saw two people wounded by shrapnel. Vehicles in the area were also damaged.

Armed Islamic factions fighting forces loyal to President Bashar Assad control parts of the Syrian capital and large parts of the city's suburbs.
