BHUBANESHWAR, India – Officials say heavy rains and flooding have killed at least 16 people in eastern India and left nearly 100,000 others homeless.
S.N. Patra, the minister in charge of disaster management in the state of Orissa, said Monday that 10 days of incessant rains have flooded nearly 2,800 villages in the state.
Patra says that the government has set up nearly 180 relief camps in the coastal and western parts of the state and is assessing the loss to crops and property.
Patra said the deaths took place over the last four days.
The monsoon season in India runs from June through September.
