Chinese state media say a 9-year-old boy was killed when the wall of his house collapsed during an earthquake in southwest China.

The official Xinhua News Agency says the boy was asleep when the quake struck in a rural area of Yunnan province on Saturday evening, causing many people to rush out of buildings.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake had a magnitude of 5.5.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs said in a statement Sunday that an additional 22 people were injured.
